December 3 question - As a writer, what was one of the coolest/best gifts you ever received?
After I got out of tenth grade with a Full A+ result, I didn't receive a diamond ring or an Iphone from my parents. From where I am, when kids pass 10th grade with that result, flexes are printed and our faces are displayed everywhere. I was in the newspaper. Political organizations, educational institutions, banks, newpapers and sucb firms like that invite these young prodigies and honour them and provide them with great motivation.
To be honest, I didn't attend any such programmes because, I didn't feel like I did something amazing. Of course my parents were pleased---sharing the news to eveyone, cutting a little cake that night and yeah:)
I did expect someone to ask me what I wanted. Nobody did.
Then after almost two months, my cousin sister who came for the eid holidays left a gift for me with her brother before she let. It was a tote bag--- a bag I wanted for so long but did nothing about it except to scroll through online shops. And in it... let me tell you...were all the things I've ever wanted. A perfume, a glowing kuromi keychain, sip water bottle, pens and pencils, sticky notes and a JOURNAL.
She bought the purple colour.
The sister I don't have much memories with, the sister whom I don't chat with much---she just knew so much about me. I am a purple girl. Cute japanese stationary was always something I stared at but never bought because paying for cuteness was something I couldn't afford.
That JOURNAL kept me sane through my bad months of this year. When my friend's dad passed away and I went to visit her after, I handed that journal to her, hoping that it'd help her heal.
That journal was the best gift I've ever received as a writer and a best gift I gifted as a writer. Journalling was my first steps into this hobby that is now a passion and---
Yeah. That was the best gift.
I had a pretty rough year. What about you?
Did you watch Stranger Things?
I still remember telling someone Noah Schnapp was my celebrity crush in 2023 and she went like 'Yeah, he's alright'
Now the whole world has a crush on him!
Happu Xmas. This year's Christmas hurts because the last one was just so good. But hey, Stranger Things is coming!!?
Happy New Year. Let's hope 2026 is kind to us all! And Steve. I just want him ALIVE or I swear I'll kill myself and travel all the way to the US as a ghost to haunt down the Duffers. JK.

Hi, Rida! I'm sorry that you had a pretty rough year! Mine has been too hectic, but things are slowing down a little. What a wonderful gift from your cousin sister! Perfect for a writer, especially the journal. I write in my journal almost every day. I find it calms and grounds me. My brother keeps one too, rarely missing a day in 60 years! I hope that your journal helped comfort your friend. My father died over 40 years ago, and I still miss him every day. Hopefully you'll have another journal very soon. Love and hugs to you! Oh yes, congrats on those 10th grade results!
ReplyDeleteSo thoughtful of your sister and just as thoughtful of you to regift that journal. You will remember those moments forever.
ReplyDeleteAnd definitely digging Stranger Things!
